CAUSES:
Protection Failure

Although protection circuits and devices are in themselves a good thing, they can also be a serious nuisance when it comes to power quality.

Protection comes in two basic forms. The first is to ensure excess current is stopped or broken (breakers), the second to ensure excess current is drained (impulse protection). They may appear to be opposing styles but both have one common feature - to stop any equipment being damaged. But when they stop working as they should, the PQ investigator needs to know what to look for.

"Over-sensitive / Nuisance Tripping" deals with earth leakage type protection devices, and their failings.

"Impulse Arrestor Failure" deals with the typical MOV and Gas Discharge Tube based protection systems as found advertised in many computer and telephone companies as protection for "fax machines", "Personal Computers", and "Home Entertainment" - and how they fail !
